Netflix to Release Explosive New Documentary on Hanoi Rocks: Glam, Grit, and Glory
April 16, 2025 — Global Entertainment Desk
Netflix has announced the upcoming release of a highly anticipated documentary centered on the legendary Finnish glam rock band, Hanoi Rocks. Titled “Hanoi Rocks: Born for Rock ‘n’ Roll”, the documentary promises to be a no-holds-barred look into the band’s meteoric rise, chaotic lifestyle, and lasting legacy in the world of rock music. The film is slated for global release on May 24, 2025.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Juho Kuosmanen and produced in collaboration with the surviving members of the band, the documentary features never-before-seen archival footage, candid interviews, and rare performance clips. Netflix teased the release with a minute-long trailer that quickly went viral, racking up over 5 million views in just 24 hours.
Formed in Helsinki in 1979, Hanoi Rocks became one of the most influential glam rock bands of the early ’80s, gaining popularity across Europe, Japan, and eventually cracking into the U.S. market. Their flamboyant fashion, raw energy, and punk-rock ethos helped pave the way for future acts like Guns N’ Roses and Mötley Crüe—many of whom openly credit Hanoi Rocks as a key inspiration.
The documentary delves deeply into the band’s early struggles, their wild years on tour, and the tragic 1984 car crash that killed drummer Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley and abruptly ended their American breakthrough. Michael Monroe, the band’s iconic frontman, appears prominently in the film, offering intimate reflections on the highs and heartbreaks that defined their journey.
In a press release, Monroe said, “This film is more than just our story—it’s a tribute to a spirit that never died. Fans old and new will get to see the raw, unfiltered truth of Hanoi Rocks.” Guitarist Andy McCoy also contributes his perspective, adding a dose of his signature bluntness and dark humor to the film.
Netflix’s move to spotlight Hanoi Rocks comes amid a growing demand for rock music documentaries, following the success of projects on Queen, David Bowie, and Nirvana. Critics are already calling Born for Rock ‘n’ Roll one of the most exciting music documentaries of the decade, with early viewers praising its gritty realism and emotional depth.
Fans can expect a global streaming release, and the platform has also announced a limited theatrical run in major cities such as London, Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Helsinki, accompanied by Q&A sessions with the filmmakers and band members. A companion soundtrack album will be released on Spotify and vinyl the same day.
With the story of Hanoi Rocks finally getting the spotlight it deserves, Netflix is not just reviving nostalgia—it’s reintroducing the chaos, charm, and charisma of glam rock’s most underrated pioneers to a new generation of fans.
