Netflix Strikes a Chord: Hanoi Rocks Documentary to Premiere This August

Netflix is turning up the volume this summer with the announcement of a brand-new documentary spotlighting legendary Finnish glam rock band Hanoi Rocks, set to premiere globally in August. The streaming giant made the official reveal via social media and press release, exciting fans of the influential but often underrated group that helped shape rock music in the 1980s.

Titled “Back to Mystery City: The Hanoi Rocks Story,” the documentary promises to chronicle the band’s explosive rise, chaotic fame, and lasting legacy. With exclusive interviews, never-before-seen footage, and a soundtrack packed with Hanoi Rocks hits, the film aims to deliver an intimate and gritty portrait of one of rock’s most impactful cult acts.

Formed in Helsinki in the late 1970s, Hanoi Rocks brought a unique blend of punk energy and glam aesthetics that predated and inspired the hair metal boom of Los Angeles. Bands like Mötley Crüe and Guns N’ Roses have cited them as a major influence, and this documentary intends to cement their rightful place in rock history.

Directed by award-winning Finnish filmmaker Petri Luukkainen, the documentary spans the band’s tumultuous journey—from playing smoky clubs in Europe to international tours and the tragic 1984 car crash that claimed the life of drummer Razzle, derailing the band’s momentum.

“We’re finally telling our story in full,” said frontman Michael Monroe in a statement. “Hanoi Rocks was more than music—it was an attitude, a revolution. This film brings it all back, the highs, the heartbreak, the madness.”

Netflix’s announcement has been met with enthusiasm across social platforms, with both longtime fans and curious newcomers expressing excitement. The streamer has increasingly leaned into music documentaries in recent years, following successful projects on artists like Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Metallica.

In addition to archival materials, the film reportedly includes commentary from notable fans and artists who credit Hanoi Rocks as a cornerstone in their own musical evolution. Expect appearances from the likes of Slash, Nikki Sixx, and Dave Grohl, all of whom have acknowledged the band’s role in reshaping rock’s image.

“Back to Mystery City: The Hanoi Rocks Story” will be available to stream on Netflix beginning August 15, marking the first official film to explore the band’s legacy in such depth. For those who lived it—and those discovering it anew—this documentary promises a loud, emotional ride through rock ‘n’ roll history.
