The Colorado Avalanche have been active in the trade market, making significant moves to strengthen their roster ahead of the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline on March 7.
In a notable three-team trade on January 24, the Avalanche sent star forward Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes. In return, Colorado acquired center Martin Necas and forward Jack Drury, along with a 2025 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick. This trade not only bolstered the Avalanche’s offensive depth but also provided salary cap flexibility, as Rantanen’s cap hit of $9.25 million was offset by the combined cap hits of Necas and Drury, totaling $8.225 million.
Additionally, the Avalanche addressed their goaltending situation by trading goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, forward Nikolai Kovalenko, and draft picks to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, forward Givani Smith, and a 2027 fifth-round pick. This move aimed to stabilize the goaltending position, with Blackwood expected to take on a more prominent role.
These strategic acquisitions reflect the Avalanche’s commitment to enhancing their roster depth and competitiveness as they prepare for the remainder of the season.
