Breaking News: Fire Erupts at Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema in Downtown Birmingham

Birmingham, AL – April 30, 2025

A dramatic fire broke out late Tuesday evening at the popular **Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema**, located in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. The incident occurred shortly after 9:00 PM, while moviegoers were enjoying screenings in the independent cinema’s downstairs theater space.

According to Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services, the blaze is believed to have started in a storage area near the concession stand. Emergency alarms sounded promptly, and all guests and staff were safely evacuated within minutes. Firefighters arrived on the scene quickly and were able to contain the fire within an hour.

“Thanks to the quick actions of the staff and emergency responders, no injuries have been reported,” said Fire Chief Dana Brooks. “Our investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but we do not suspect foul play at this time.”

The Sidewalk Film Center, a beloved hub for independent film and cultural events, has temporarily closed for assessment and repairs. Executive Director Chloe Cook issued a brief statement: “We’re heartbroken but grateful that everyone is safe. We’ll work hard to reopen soon and continue bringing great cinema to our community.”

Officials are expected to provide further updates later this week regarding the extent of the damage and the estimated reopening date.
