The Biggest Release of the Year: Netflix Announces Powerful New Documentary on Secretariat – Gallops Onto Screens This Summer

In what is being hailed as one of the most anticipated releases of the year, Netflix has officially announced the premiere of a powerful new documentary on the legendary racehorse Secretariat. Titled “Heart of a Champion: The Secretariat Legacy,” the film is set to debut globally this summer, reigniting the awe and admiration surrounding one of the greatest athletes in history—equine or human.

Secretariat, the Triple Crown-winning horse whose 1973 Belmont Stakes performance remains unmatched, is celebrated not only for his record-breaking speed but also for the heart and determination that inspired millions around the world. Through rare archival footage, exclusive interviews, and state-of-the-art cinematic recreations, the documentary promises an emotionally gripping journey into the life, legacy, and legend of “Big Red.”

Produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay in collaboration with Netflix Sports and ESPN Films, Heart of a Champion takes viewers behind the gates of Meadow Stable, where Secretariat’s story began. The documentary explores the bond between Secretariat and his devoted owner Penny Chenery, who defied gender norms in a male-dominated sport to guide him to glory. It also highlights the role of jockey Ron Turcotte and trainer Lucien Laurin, painting a vivid picture of the team behind the icon.

What sets this documentary apart is its exploration of how Secretariat transcended the racetrack to become a symbol of hope and pride during a turbulent era in American history. Set against the backdrop of the 1970s, when the nation was grappling with political scandal and social upheaval, Secretariat’s dominance brought unity, inspiration, and a renewed sense of belief in the power of perseverance.

In addition to its sweeping narrative and cinematic brilliance, the film includes never-before-seen home videos, personal letters, and a stirring original score composed by Hans Zimmer.

Critics and fans alike are already buzzing about the release. Early festival screenings have reportedly left audiences in tears and standing ovations. Netflix has confirmed that the documentary will premiere on July 25, 2025, with a limited theatrical release in select cities before streaming globally.

Whether you’re a lifelong racing fan or discovering Secretariat’s legacy for the first time, Heart of a Champion promises a story of unmatched greatness that gallops straight in

to the heart.
