Tragedy has struck northern Montenegro as the iconic **Đurđevića Tara Bridge** reportedly **collapsed at approximately 10:24 AM local time** following a **catastrophic structural failure**, authorities have confirmed.
Eyewitnesses say a deafening crack echoed through the Tara Canyon before the central span of the historic bridge gave way, plunging vehicles and debris nearly 170 meters into the gorge below. Initial reports suggest **at least four vehicles were crossing at the time**, and multiple casualties are feared.
Rescue operations are underway as emergency teams from nearby Žabljak and Pljevlja have been dispatched to the remote site. Helicopter support is en route to assist in search and recovery.
The Đurđevića Tara Bridge, completed in 1940, is a symbol of engineering and tourism in Montenegro. Officials say early signs point to **undetected stress fractures** as the cause.
