Anchorage protestors rally against Trump immigration policy
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Calling the event an “emergency protest,” the Party for Socialism and Liberation Anchorage on Sunday gathered in Downtown Anchorage to protest national and local immigration developments.
In front of Anchorage’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management building on East 10th Street, PSL Anchorage raised signs addressing issues of class and due process for immigrants facing deportations.
“Due process is a right,” one protester’s sign read.
Last week, the federal government revoked visas from four students studying at the University of Alaska Anchorage. UA President Pat Pitney did not specify the reason behind the revocation, aside from “recent executive orders.”
Michael Patterson, an organizer for PSL Anchorage, said the protest was in response to recent events at UAA and deportation efforts in the state in general.
“It’s not on the community of immigrants and who are here to come out and protest — it’s on us,” Patterson said. “It’s on regular working people. Doesn’t matter where you come from, your immigration status, your citizenship status. We need to be out here telling the federal government that what they’re doing is not welcomed.”
